On Wednesday evening May 7, 2008, Denise McCourt - National Membership Director of the API, and Richard Haralson - Chapter Chairman, Ken Sheffield  - Chairman Student Liaison Committee, and Bob Hanley – Chairman Contributions Committee of the Houston Chapter, attended the Thirty Second Annual Excellence Awards Program for graduating seniors of HISD’s High School for Engineering Professions which was held at  the Conrad Hilton Hotel on the campus of the University of Houston.

We awarded $ 1,000 scholarships to fifteen of the graduating senior class students, to assist with freshman year expenses at colleges and universities.

API HOUSTON CONTRIBUTIONS EXCEED TWO MILLION DOLLARS

During the past 23 years, the Houston Chapter of the API has contributed more than 2.025 million USD to educational ( 94% ) and charitable/civic ( 6% ) activities. Cumulative contributions since 1985 to endowed scholarship programs at 5 public universities offering Petroleum Engineering degrees in Texas ( $256K each ) total 1.28 million dollars. Contributions to Louisiana State University’s non endowed scholarship program since 1998 for students enrolled in Petroleum Engineering total $55K USD. Contributions made to benefit middle school and high school students through the Science Engineering Fair of Houston since 1985 and HISD’s High School for the Engineering Professions since 1998 total $219K USD.

During that same period, the Chapter contributed $295K USD for educational activities for elementary level students and the general public through the Weiss Energy Hall at Houston’s Museum of Natural Science and the Offshore Energy Center’s “Ocean Star” offshore drilling rig museum in Galveston, Texas. An additional $50K USD was contributed to seminars for secondary level education teachers conducted by the Denver Earth Science Project of the Colorado School of Mines, and by NEED, the National Energy Education Development project.
